The “Digital Intern” Framework
Traditional Zero Trust means you always check that users are who they say they are. But with AI, you also need to check what they’re doing and why.
A good way to think about AI is to treat every agent like a “digital intern.” For example, if you have hired a super-smart intern who knows everything from the internet but has no sense of company rules or business logic. You wouldn’t give them full access on day one. Instead, you’d give them simple tasks, watch their work closely, and limit what they can touch. You just have to follow the same framework for securing the autonomous agent.
Here’s how you can do Zero Trust for AI:
Supervised autonomy: Any risky action, like deleting files or moving money, should require a human’s approval. The AI can get things ready, but a person needs to make the final call.
Task-based identity: Never give an AI agent a general “admin” role. Each agent should have its own account, with permissions that match just the job it needs to do. If it’s helping marketing, it shouldn’t have access to HR data.
Probationary access: When you bring in a new AI agent, start with read-only access. Let it watch and learn. Only give it more power once you’re sure it behaves properly.
