FAQ: Asset Management

JumpCloud® Asset Management helps you track, manage, and optimize your organization’s IT assets throughout their lifecycle. The following is a list of commonly asked questions about Asset Management.

General Questions

What asset types are supported?

Asset Management classifies all objects as assets and supports the following categories:

  • Devices
    • Desktops, laptops, mobile devices, servers
  • Accessories
    • Large peripherals like monitors, printers, and A/V equipment
    • Small peripherals like keyboards, mice, cables, and desktop accessories
  • Locations
    • Primary and satellite office locations.

If an asset type or field doesn’t exist by default, you can use custom fields to classify them.

Can I track non-managed devices and other assets?

Yes. You can import any asset using CSV or the API, including devices not managed by JumpCloud. This includes mobile phones, printers, monitors, and accessories.

How does Asset Management prevent duplicate entries?

Asset Management uses the device’s serial number as the unique identifier. If a serial number already exists in JumpCloud, any updates or changes are reflected in that single asset record. This ensures there are no duplicate entries, even when data is synced automatically or imported manually.

What kinds of changes are tracked in the asset history log?

Generic Events: Asset Created, Asset Deleted (non-managed only), Asset Updated (non-critical), Note Added

Critical Events: Owner Changed, Status Changed, Location Changed, Agent Version Changed, MDM Status Changed, MFA Status Changed (these are tracked indefinitely)

Will there be an API or saved views?

Yes. API access and Saved Views will be available by General Availability (GA) to enable teams to build workflows and customize how they view asset data.

Device Management Integration

Which assets are automatically imported into Asset Management?

All JumpCloud-managed devices with the Agent installed or enrolled in Mobile Device Management (MDM)/Android Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) are automatically synced into Asset Management. This includes macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS/iPad OS, and Android devices.

What fields are automatically filled for managed devices?

When a device is managed by JumpCloud, the following fields are automatically populated and synced:

  • Serial Number
  • OS Family, OS, OS Version
  • RAM, CPU, Disk Encryption
  • Vendor, Model
  • Agent Version, Last Sync Time
  • MFA Status
  • MDM Enrollment Status
Which fields cannot be changed for managed devices?
  • The owner cannot be changed manually if synced from JumpCloud Device Management.
  • Managed device assets cannot be deleted from Asset Management.
How often does Asset Management sync with Device Management?

Asset Management syncs with Device Management instantly upon initial enabling to import existing JumpCloud-managed devices. After initial import, device assets are updated automatically when their statuses change or new devices are added.

What happens if a device is deleted from the Devices page?

If a managed device is deleted from the Devices page, its asset record remains in Asset Management with the status automatically updated to reflect its removal. This allows IT teams to retain a historical view of deprecated or decommissioned assets for audit or reporting purposes.

Importing and Exporting Assets

How do I migrate from another asset tracking platform to JumpCloud?

You can import existing asset lists into JumpCloud using the CSV import feature. From a high level, you’ll export data from your existing asset tracking platform and import it into JumpCloud. JumpCloud doesn’t currently support direct connections with other platforms.
