Identity Verification Overview: Users

Has your IT admin requested you to verify your identity for your JumpCloud account? Find out more about what Identity Verification is and how to use it.

About Identity Verification

What is Identity Verification?

When Identity Verification is enabled, you have to provide multiple factors to prove you are who you say you are. Identity Verification is sometimes referred to as Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) or Two-Factor Authentication (2FA). You prove who you are with information that you know, like a username and password, with something that you have like a six-digit code, and with something that you are like a fingerprint or a retinal scan.

A common type of identity verification asks for something that you know and something that you have.

Authenticator App Code

Identity Verification uses a six-digit code to verify your identity when you access a resource that’s guarded by Identity Verification. The six digit code is generated by an authenticator app such as JumpCloud Protect or Google Authenticator. The application is typically on your phone or computer and is connected to the resources guarded by Identity Verification.

A Look at JumpCloud Identity Verification

Your IT Admin determines what resources, such as your computer and applications, are guarded by JumpCloud Identity Verification, and they communicate to you what those are. They may require you to verify your identity to access the JumpCloud User Portal and SSO applications, your device, and your RADIUS network.

Choose an Authenticator Application

To set up Identity Verification, you need to have an authenticator app downloaded. There are many authenticator applications that you can use, but JumpCloud recommends using JumpCloud Protect for your Identity Verification needs.

Ask your IT Admin if they have a preference for which authenticator app you should use, then download the app to use it with JumpCloud Identity Verification. Again, JumpCloud recommends using JumpCloud Protect, but other possible authenticator apps are Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, Authy, and Duo Mobile.

Set Up Identity Verification

Before you can use Identity Verification, you need to set it up in your JumpCloud User Portal.

Log in with JumpCloud Identity Verification

Logging in with JumpCloud Identity Verification changes slightly depending on the resource you’re logging in to, but the workflow generally looks like this:

  1. Go to the resource you want to access.
  2. Enter your username and password.
  3. The resource will ask for you to verify your identity using the verification method you’ve already set up.
  4. You will gain access to the resource.

Reset Identity Verification

If your device has been replaced or your account has been compromised, you can reset Identity Verification.

Note:

Identity Verification attempts are not unlimited. Allowed number of user attempts is set by the IT Admin. Admin attempts are limited to five. If settings are selected, that will count toward password or MFA attempts.
