People of JumpCloud | Kate Lake

People are the lifeblood of any organization, but so rarely do they receive the spotlight like the innovative applications and services, company missions, and devoted customer communities they work so hard to create. We want to change that.

At JumpCloud every individual makes a difference, and their work matters no matter what function they hold. This ongoing series aims to showcase the personalities and contributions of every JumpCloudian and share the spotlight with the people who work hard every day to help Make Work HappenTM.

Kate Lake

We recently caught up with Kate Lake about what it’s like to work as a Senior SEO Content Writer at JumpCloud.

When did you start working at JumpCloud? May 2021.

How did you first learn about JumpCloud? LinkedIn job board.

Can you run us through a day in the life of your role at JumpCloud? My job is largely focused on concentrated writing, which I love! I get to log on, check which pieces I’m working on today, and dive into researching and writing them. My pieces are usually blogs or long-form content, and they often give me the opportunity to talk with experts within the company as part of my research. I learn so much during each one of those conversations!

How have you grown as an individual since starting at the company? I’ve learned so much about IT, security, and how business and technology are evolving. I’ve been challenged to take on long and in-depth pieces, which have helped me hone my research and writing skills. I’ve also learned what it looks like to be part of a growth-stage company like JumpCloud and how to be a productive and contributing team member in this environment.

Pick a JumpCloud value (Build Connections, Think Big, 1% Better Every Day) and share an example of how you lived that value recently. Build connections — I’ve had the opportunity to interview and collaborate with some of the IT experts here at JumpCloud, and I learn so much from every conversation with them. These connections help me create deeper, more technical, and more nuanced IT content that speaks to JumpCloud’s value proposition.

What is something that you have accomplished at JumpCloud that you are proud of? Undertaking an extensive 50-page book with O’Reilly titled, IT Necessities for a Distributed World.

What keeps you energized about working at JumpCloud? I believe in it! I’m so excited to be working at a company that’s taking off and making waves in the business community. I love telling someone I work at JumpCloud and hearing that they use it at work. And I love our positive, empathetic, and driven company culture — every morning, I look forward to logging on and doing the type of work I love with people who are just as excited as I am.

What do you like to do on your days off? I love being outside (hiking, kayaking, camping, etc.), traveling, writing for pleasure, and consuming sci-fi/fantasy in just about any form.

What advice do you have for prospective JumpCloud candidates? Bring your passion! Everyone’s passion at JumpCloud is so apparent, and I think it plays a major role in our success and positive employee experience.

What book or movie have you recently read/seen and why would you recommend it? “Sphere” by Michael Crichton. It was written in 1987 so it’s not outdated to the point that it’s unreadable. I want to talk about the ending with someone.

What’s something you plan to do in the next year that you’ve never done? Running a half marathon.

What is your 15 minutes of fame? When I was living in Washington D.C., I won Iron Maiden concert tickets on the radio and they played my reaction live.

If you could only eat one item for every meal for the rest of your life, what would it be? Pasta.

Do you have any pets as in-house colleagues? Not yet (stay tuned).
