Mac Management as a Service

As more Macs® are introduced into the enterprise, and more IT management tools move to the cloud, it’s no wonder that so many IT admins are searching for solutions that can deliver Mac management as a service. Macs are now a significant part of any IT infrastructure. Yet, there are few IT management tools that do a great job with managing Mac users and systems in addition to everything else an IT organization needs.

This blog post discusses a new Mac management solution called JumpCloud® Directory-as-a-Service® that can not only deliver Mac management as a service, but securely manage and connect users to virtually any IT resource from the cloud. First, though, let’s take a look at some of the traditional challenges that have led to this point.

Traditional Mac Management Challenges

mac management with active directory

A key part of the reason that IT organizations were historically resistant to Mac (and Linux® devices for that matter) was not because they didn’t like the platform, but because they didn’t have the management tools to control and secure these non-Windows platforms. Of course, this was because Microsoft® Windows® was the dominant platform for so many years that a whole ecosystem of IT management solutions had been created to manage the infrastructure. In fact, Microsoft may have created some of the best management tools for Windows-based networks with Active Directory® (AD) and SCCM (formerly known as SMS).

Active Directory in particular would go on to become one of the most popular Microsoft solutions on the planet. AD ensured that IT organizations could tightly manage user access to Windows based systems and applications. Additionally, a key feature of the AD platform, called GPOs, would help IT admins control and secure the systems themselves. Of course, AD didn’t work nearly as well with Mac or Linux machines (and users), but this wasn’t initially an issue due to the dominance of Microsoft IT solutions around the new millenium.

But, the market was talking. Mac and Linux machines were becoming more and more popular. IT admins had to figure out a way to be inclusive. Unfortunately, there weren’t great IT management tools that were cross platform. In fact, a cross-platform Active Directory alternative didn’t even exist. System management tools emerged for Macs, but often they didn’t focus on the other platforms. The result was disarray and sub-par tools to manage the infrastructure.

JumpCloud Changes the Game

Fortunately, a next generation cloud identity management platform recently emerged to reimagine what a cross platform Active Directory as a service type of solution might look like. A subset of that platform would, of course, be Mac management as a service. IT admins would have the ability to manage Mac users and the fleet of systems from one console. This modern IDaaS platform would also handle Windows and Linux systems as well.

JumpCloud Directory-as-a-Service is not only a Mac management as a service platform, but a next generation cloud directory service that securely manages and connects users to their IT resources with no regard to the platform, provider, protocol, or location. This includes systems, applications, files, networks, and virtually any IT resource for that matter. That is the power of having One Directory to Rule them All®.
