Create a Mac USB External Storage Restriction Policy

The macOS USB External Storage Restriction policy prevents access to external storage attached via USB, Thunderbolt, or an SD Card slot. External storage USB devices include thumb/jump drives, external hard drives, and SD cards.

Note:

This policy does not block all USB access on your device. You can still connect a USB input device like a mouse or keyboard without issue when this policy is applied to devices. This policy focuses exclusively on external storage connectivity.

Considerations

  • Applying this policy restricts your external storage capabilities. You will be unable to mount new attached devices after the policy is applied.
  • Removing this policy makes the USB ports available again for mounting storage devices.
  • Any devices attached at the time of application of the policy will still be usable until reboot.
  • This policy applies to all users on a device. Only managed users will receive notifications that storage is blocked. All other users will be silently blocked.
