Today’s organizations are struggling with how to enable their users with IT assets. The average user has a staggering 25 online accounts [Halock]. This “password overload” results in a lot of challenges accessing resources – along with time-consuming calls to the IT desk for password resets.

Even worse, it introduces security risks in the form of password reuse.

That’s not IT’s only security concern. There’s also the rise of Shadow IT, which refers to employees coming up with their own IT solutions – and causing company operations to take place on systems, applications, and networks that IT has no control over.

These sore spots are significant and they are only getting worse. The world is moving to more technology, not less. JumpCloud’s Directory-as-a-Service® feature True Single Sign-On is taking direct aim at the problem of enabling centralized user access to IT resources.

When Single Sign-On Went By Another Name

A couple of decades ago the problem of single sign-on was largely solved. Instead of calling it single sign-on back then, we called it a domain. We logged into the domain via Microsoft Active Directory and the domain controller.

It all connected together because just about everything was Microsoft Windows based. AD was able to authenticate logins to the domain, systems, servers, file servers, and applications. Everything was hosted on-prem, so IT had the control that they needed over the systems. Accounts could be easily created and terminated because there was really only one spot to manage those tasks.

That was the closest we were able to get to a True Single Sign-On™ environment.

Cloud Computing And Heterogeneity Stake Their Claim

True Single Sign-On™

Since that time, the IT landscape has dramatically shifted.

The past five years have brought tremendous change. What started in the early 2000s with the cloud has now become a heterogeneous environment. Microsoft Windows is no longer the dominant platform. Email is outsourced to Google Apps and Office 365. Even our productivity applications live in the cloud. Server infrastructure has gone from our own data centers to AWS. Wired networks are no longer the norm. WiFi is used virtually everywhere.

While the concepts haven’t changed, the underlying environment has. Users still want easy access to all of the IT resources they need. IT still wants control, security, and efficiency. Unfortunately, today’s environment is not equipped with the proper tools for the modern IT landscape.

Enter The Realm Of DaaS Featuring True Single Sign-On

Our belief is that the world will move to more platforms, not fewer. That’s why we built JumpCloud’s Directory-as-a-Service for the heterogeneous world, featuring True Single Sign-On™.

Since it is better for the organization, IT should embrace the multi-platform frontier. Better productivity is achieved when an organization has the right platforms in place. That’s critical in an increasingly competitive environment.

JumpCloud’s independent, cloud-based directory service is AD and LDAP reimagined. It tightly integrates with a variety of key platforms, including Google Apps, Office 365, AWS, Macs, Linux, and Windows. Our cloud directory is focused on supporting multiple protocols, thus enabling users to log into virtually every business IT resources they need.

The best part? The user does all of this from one account.
