Has your IT Admin asked you to install the JumpCloud agent on your work computer? This article walks you through downloading and installing the JumpCloud agent on your work computer.
What is the JumpCloud Agent?
The JumpCloud agent is a piece of technology that facilitates connectivity between JumpCloud and your computer and keeps your IT administrators informed about your computer's health and status. Your IT admins can update your computer through the agent as needed to keep your computer running safely and smoothly.
Prerequisites:
- You need to know the operating system your computer is running to install the correct agent on your computer. If you aren't sure what operating system your computer is running, contact your IT admin.
- You should only install the JumpCloud agent on your work computer. Don't install the agent on your personal computer unless it has been approved by your IT admin.
- You need your JumpCloud account credentials to access your User Portal. If you aren't sure what these are, contact your IT admin.
- Your IT Admin must have enabled the remote install setting for your organization.
Installing the JumpCloud Agent on Your Computer
You will not see the JumpCloud Agent section in the Security tab of your User Portal until your IT Admin enables remote install for your organization. See Enable Users to Install the Agent.

Installing the JumpCloud Agent on Windows
First, download the agent.
To download the agent on your Windows computer:
- Log in to the User Portal: https://console.jumpcloud.com.
- Go to Security.
- In the JumpCloud Agent section, select Windows as your operating system.
- Click Download Agent. The agent downloads to the location on your computer that web downloads are saved. The default location for downloads on Windows computers is your Downloads folder: C:\users\your name\downloads.
Next, install the agent.
To install the agent on your Windows computer:
- If you've closed the User Portal, log back in: https://console.jumpcloud.com.
- Go to Security.
- In the JumpCloud Agent section, click Generate Key. You will paste this key into the agent installer when you install the agent on your computer. They key is only active for 1 hour. You can generate a new key if your key expires before you install the agent.
- Go to the location on your computer where the agent installation files were saved when you downloaded the agent. The default location for downloads on Windows computers is your Downloads folder: C:\users\your name\downloads.
- Locate the JumpCloudInstaller.exe file, then double-click the file to initiate agent installation.
- Follow the instructions in the installer and, when prompted, paste the key you generated in the User Portal.
After you successfully install the agent on your computer, your IT admin receives an email that notifies them that your computer is online.
If you experience any issues while installing the agent, contact your IT admin. They will be able to verify whether the agent is reporting successfully. You can also verify that the agent is running in Task Manager.
Installing the JumpCloud Agent on a Mac
First, download the agent.
To download the agent on your Mac computer:
- Log in to the User Portal: https://console.jumpcloud.com.
- Go to Security.
- In the JumpCloud Agent section, select Mac as your operating system.
- Click Download Agent. The agent downloads to the location on your computer that web downloads are saved. The default location for downloads on Mac computers is your Downloads folder: Finder > Downloads.
Next, install the agent.
To install the agent on your Mac computer:
- If you've closed the User Portal, log back in: https://console.jumpcloud.com.
- Go to Security.
- In the JumpCloud Agent section, click Generate Key. You will paste this key into the agent installer when you install the agent on your computer. They key is only active for 1 hour. You can generate a new key if your key expires before you install the agent.
- Go to the location on your computer where the agent installation files were saved when you downloaded the agent. The default location for downloads on Mac computers is your Downloads folder: Finder > Downloads.
- Locate the jumpcloud-agent.pkg file, then double-click the file to initiate agent installation.
- Follow the instructions in the installer and, when prompted, paste the key you generated in the User Portal.
After you successfully install the agent on your computer, your IT admin receives an email that notifies them that your computer is online.
If you experience any issues while installing the agent, contact your IT admin. They will be able to verify whether the agent is reporting successfully. You can also verify that the agent is running in Activity Monitor.
Installing the JumpCloud Agent on Linux
First, download the agent.
To download the JumpCloud agent on your Linux computer:
- Log in to your JumpCloud User Portal: https://console.jumpcloud.com.
- Go to Security.
- In the JumpCloud Agent section, select Linux as your operating system.
- Click Generate Command. This command is only active for 1 hour. You can generate a new command if the command expires before you install the agent.
Next, install the agent.
To install the JumpCloud agent on your Linux computer:
Log in to the host system as root or sudoer, then paste the command you generated in the User Portal into the terminal window and execute the command.
After you successfully install the agent on your computer, your IT admin receives an email that notifies them that your computer is online.
If you experience any issues while installing the agent, contact your IT admin. They will be able to verify whether the agent is reporting successfully. You can also verify that the agent is running in System Monitor.
