Is there a free OpenLDAP™? It’s a strange question, but one that’s still being asked as IT admins search for cost-effective identity management tools. We already know that OpenLDAP is free. It’s an open source solution after all, so why does talking about a free OpenLDAP offering even matter?
Is OpenLDAP Free?
Well, the truth is that, when it comes down to brass tacks, OpenLDAP is actually not free to implement. Downloading and installing the software may be without cost, but when it comes to actually leveraging the solution, OpenLDAP is far from free.
Not-so Free OpenLDAP
First and foremost, OpenLDAP requires a dedicated server to function, whether on-prem or cloud-hosted. On-prem server stacks can get incredibly pricey and also need physical space in the office to operate. Cloud-hosted servers obviously don’t require any office space and can be more economical than purchasing physical servers, but are usually priced on a per-hour usage basis, so opting for them certainly adds up over time.
There are also hosting and security solutions, load balancing systems, VPNs, and many other technical tools required to properly implement OpenLDAP. And, perhaps most importantly, since OpenLDAP implementation is notoriously difficult, there are significant personnel costs to integrate, manage, and maintain OpenLDAP.
Free Hosted OpenLDAP: LDAP-as-a-Service
So, while OpenLDAP is considered free because of its open source heritage, it is easy to understand that it is hardly free to implement and use. Cost-conscious IT organizations looking to control their identity management are forced to find a more affordable solution that still provides the same efficacy as OpenLDAP. On top of that, the prospect of cloud hosted LDAP is pointing admins in these organizations towards “as-a-Service”-delivered versions of the authentication protocol.
There is an OpenLDAP alternative that is completely free for under 10 users for those that want to run OpenLDAP from the cloud. Using a global network of OpenLDAP servers hosted in the cloud, this LDAP-as-a-Service offloads all of the work required to actually implement OpenLDAP, while removing the need for on-prem servers and space.
