LDAP infrastructure has always been difficult to implement. Oftentimes, LDAP not only requires hardware and software, but a great deal of networking infrastructure and security to ensure that the authentication approach is highly available and secure. And, that doesn’t even include the level of effort behind connect applications and other IT resources to said LDAP infrastructure. As a result, many IT admins are wondering if there is a free cloud LDAP alternative that they can take advantage of.
Current LDAP Options
Before we dive into a free cloud LDAP alternative, let’s explore some LDAP options on the market today. At the top of the list is OpenLDAP™, an open-source implementation of LDAP that’s been a long-standing favorite of IT admins. While it is free to use, OpenLDAP is notoriously troublesome to implement and manage without the proper technical knowhow. Additionally, as an on-prem instance, OpenLDAP requires physical hardware to run, which drives up costs for IT organizations.
Other LDAP options include 389 Directory Server or Red Hat Directory Server. Both of these solutions are free to use as well, although the process of leveraging them is similar to OpenLDAP. They are on-prem instances, and require keen management and on-prem servers to properly function.
Hosted Cloud LDAP
Therefore, time-conscious IT admins are seeking out LDAP instances available from the cloud. Cloud LDAP alleviates the burden of implementing LDAP by relying on off-prem, pre-configured LDAP servers, saving organizations time. Additionally, hosted cloud LDAP servers enable a company to put the space and money necessary to leverage on-prem servers to better use.
There is a cloud LDAP offering that IT organizations can leverage for up to 10 users free forever. This free LDAP offering of the JumpCloud® Directory-as-a-Service® platform gives IT organizations the opportunity to use the cloud identity management platform for free if they are under 10 users. If they have more than 10 users, the free account is an opportunity to test out our virtual LDAP solution, called LDAP-as-a-Service, for as long as they like.
JumpCloud’s LDAP-as-a-Service solution is a globally distributed network of OpenLDAP servers that IT admins can leverage by simply pointing their applications and storage infrastructure to it. For IT admins looking to authenticate Windows®, macOS®, and Linux® systems against LDAP, JumpCloud provides a simple agent-based architecture for native user management and authentication, providing greater redundancy and performance than traditional on-prem LDAP infrastructure.

JumpCloud’s entire Directory-as-a-Service platform is available for free for under 10 users and, historically, one of the core highlights of the platform has been the cloud LDAP offering. With so many DevOps and technical applications being leveraged in modern organizations, authenticating via LDAP for solutions such as Kubernetes, Docker, Jenkins, and thousands of others is easy and secure.
