There is no doubt that cloud identity management competition is heating up. New players are entering the game in droves, and just about every IT company in the world is placing bets on the outcome. The challenge for IT is, of course, to find the cloud identity management solution with the best odds for success in their organization.

Fortunately, a next generation directory services platform has taken the inside track when it comes to cloud identity management. It’s called JumpCloud® Directory-as-a-Service®, but this comprehensive cloud directory isn’t just a one trick pony. In this blog post, we’ll discuss why the JumpCloud platform is ahead of the the cloud identity management competition, but we should outline the development of the identity management space first.

Intro to Identity Management

identity management

Historically, Microsoft® has owned the identity management space with their on-prem identity management platform called Active Directory® (AD). Of course, this made a lot of sense because IT infrastructures used to be on-prem and traditionally revolved around the Microsoft Windows® operating system. Naturally, AD handled that use case quite well.

However, as more IT resources shift to the cloud and move away from a Windows foundation, IT organizations all over the world are beginning to realize that AD has been reduced to a partial solution at best. After all, AD was specifically designed for on-prem networks that consisted of Windows-based IT resources. Yet, modern IT networks have expanded to include a variety of platforms (e.g., Windows, Mac®, Linux®), providers (e.g., Google, AWS®, IBM®), protocols (e.g., SAML, LDAP, RADIUS), and locations (e.g., cloud and on-prem).

All of these changes are rendering Active Directory far less valuable and useful today. As a result, many of the tech giants would have you jump to their IDaaS platform, but as we know, their platforms largely work within their walled gardens. For example, Azure® Active Directory is largely a user management system for Azure and some web applications, whereas Google Identity Management service is really for Google Apps/G Suite and a few, select web apps – admins can’t mix and match. Unfortunately, this seems to be the trend for all of the typical players in the game such as Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and others – but where does that leave IT admins?

Replace AD with JumpCloud

The Future of Identity Management

IT admins don’t want to deal with a laundry list of siloed solutions anymore. They would also like to eliminate their entire on-prem identity management infrastructure in favor of a comprehensive cloud replacement. With that in mind, we can start to understand why the cloud identity management competition is heating up. This is also the reason why so many new cloud identity management solutions have appeared over the past decade. Of course, therein lies the traditional challenge for IT admins. That is, to find the cloud identity management solution with the best odds for success in their organization, as previously noted.

Fortunately, there is a next generation cloud identity management competitor that is leading the pack when it comes to cloud identity management. This holistic cloud directory is taking a new approach to the IAM market, which is to fundamentally transform it so that IT organizations can have more choice in the IT resources they choose for their end users. It’s called JumpCloud Directory-as-a-Service, and it is winning the cloud identity management competition.
