A theme of the AWS re:Invent 2013 conference this past week would have to be “less ops, more dev” – a key JumpCloud® theme. The discussions with DevOps, IT pros, and network security experts were focused on how organizations automate many parts of their DevOps process. It’s interesting to think about the drivers behind this really important topic. Some of them include:

  • Increased competitive landscape, so consequently an increased sense of pressure to move quickly
  • Advent of cloud computing
  • Automation of configuration / deployment process
  • Scarcity of technical resources
  • Desire to innovate at the SysAdmin/DevOps level

Organizations Want Less Ops, More Dev

When you combine all of these factors, they point to the fact that organizations need “less ops, more dev” from their DevOps and IT teams. Organizations are looking for increased functionality as long as they can get reliable performance or service from their application. Many of the sessions focused on how to take advantage of different DevOps approaches and tools that help make this theme a reality. A number of the vendors focused on this trend as well.

JumpCloud Streamlines Ops, Freeing Space for Dev

The concept of automation is a key tenet of JumpCloud’s Directory-as-a-Service® solution. It’s not that we think of manual work as unimportant, but we do believe that anything that can be automated should be. And, “less ops, more dev” doesn’t mean skipping ops tasks. However, it does mean spending less time on ops tasks and better reliability. We value automation that creates leverage for IT admins and sys admins. We are doing as much as we possibly can to automate many of the tasks of managing users and devices. Some examples include authentication, authorization, and device management, whether on-prem or in the cloud. As a result, IT and ops folks can spend more time contributing to critical innovation tasks that bring more of their product to market. JumpCloud can enable developers to do their ops tasks quicker, creating more space and time for development.
