Free Okta® Alternatives

By Zach DeMeyer Posted April 7, 2019

With Okta®’s pricing rising to upwards of $25 per user per month, many IT admins are asking whether there are free Okta alternatives worth considering. Of course, it depends upon the key capabilities that you are looking for and the problems you are trying to solve to be able to properly answer that question.

There is an Okta alternative worth considering that’s free for the first ten users. Called Directory-as-a-Service®, this modern Identity-as-a-Service (IDaaS) platform is securely managing and connecting end users to their IT resources including systems, applications, files, and networks regardless of platform, protocol, provider, and location. You could actually call JumpCloud an alternative to Microsoft® Active Directory®, though it does have web application single sign-on (SSO) capabilities in the same vein as Okta.

Before we dive into Directory-as-a-Service, though, let’s talk about how Okta fits into today’s identity management scene.

IDaaS in IAM

The web application SSO market has become quite active over the last decade. Traditionally, IT organizations have leveraged Microsoft Active Directory as their core directory service, but as non-Windows® resources, such as web applications, appeared, new vendors such as Okta and OneLogin® extended AD identities to web applications. This approach worked well for a while, with SSO built on top of an existing identity and access management (IAM) solution.

The challenges started to appear as IT organizations started to leverage even more non-Windows solutions. Some of these include macOS® and Linux® systems, cloud servers from AWS® or Google Cloud Platform™, G Suite™ and Office 365™, Samba file servers and NAS appliances for file storage, WiFi, and more. The IAM approach of AD and added-on solutions, like Okta, struggled to manage this entire breadth of solution set.

A Free Okta Alternative

The result was that IT organizations started to seek out alternatives to the Active Directory plus IAM add-on tool stack. These included alternatives to solutions like Okta as well. And, of course, a large part of this deliberation is cost, so IT organizations have leaned more towards free alternatives.

When it comes to actually free SSO options, the choices are slim to none. And, of course, leveraging SSO solutions require a directory service instance, like Active Directory, to effectively operate. This means that, regardless of if there was a free SSO alternative, IT organizations would still need to pay for, and manage, their directory instance. These organizations are up the proverbial creek, as it were, needing a cost-effective replacement for their entire IAM approach.

For many of these IT organizations, the cloud directory service from JumpCloud® is an ideal fit. Directory-as-a-Service (DaaS) combines the core directory capabilities like a cross-platform Active Directory with the cloud-forward, single sign-on abilities of Okta, along with cross-platform system management and network controls with RADIUS. What’s more, the entire DaaS product is available for free for the first ten users in every instance. Afterwards, organizations can scale their JumpCloud account to their workforce with an affordable pricing model.
