Automating software updates can ensure that your users are in compliance and running the latest versions. This policy does not control major macOS upgrades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This policy controls the update settings available on macOS devices in <strong>System Settings<\/strong> &gt; <strong>General<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Software Update<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Automatic Updates<\/strong>. These settings determine how updates are downloaded and installed on user devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/macos_system_settings_software_update_preferences.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-notification-card-wysiwyg notification-card note\"><div class=\"notification-card-content\"><div class=\"notification-card-icon\"><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/themes\/jumpcloud\/assets\/images\/gutenberg-blocks\/note-icon.png\" \/><\/p><\/div><div class=\"notification-card-copy is-type-body-default\"><div><strong class=\"notification-card-type\">Note:<\/strong> \n<ul>\n<li>The settings in this policy are separate from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/support\/create-a-macos-patch-policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">JumpCloud Patch policies<\/a>. If you want to automatically install updates without user interaction, this can only be achieved with Patch Management.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, you can use this policy to prevent users from controlling how software is updated on their devices by deselecting the Settings in this policy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n <\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The policy works on all devices running\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/support\/agent-compatibility-system-requirements-and-impacts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">JumpCloud-supported macOS versions<\/a>\u00a0that are enrolled in Mobile Device Management (MDM).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To create a macOS Software Update Preferences Policy<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>Log in to the JumpCloud Admin&nbsp;Portal:&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/console.jumpcloud.com\/login\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/console.jumpcloud.com\/login<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to&nbsp;<strong>DEVICE MANAGEMENT &gt; Policy Management<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the&nbsp;<strong>All<\/strong>&nbsp;tab, click (<strong>+<\/strong>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the New Policy panel, select the&nbsp;<strong>Mac<\/strong>&nbsp;tab.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the Software Update Preferences policy from the list, then click&nbsp;<strong>configure<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>(Optional) Enter a new name for the policy or keep the default. Policy names must be unique.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For&nbsp;<strong>Policy Notes<\/strong>, enter details like when you created the policy, where you tested it, and where you deployed it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under&nbsp;<strong>Settings<\/strong>, configure these fields:\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"enter is-lower-alpha\">\n<li>Select&nbsp;<strong>Pre-release Software<\/strong>&nbsp;to include pre-release (beta) software in software update prompts on user devices.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select&nbsp;<strong>App Store Updates<\/strong>&nbsp;to automatically install app updates from Apple\u2019s App Store.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select&nbsp;<strong>macOS Updates<\/strong>&nbsp;to automatically install OS updates from Apple.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select&nbsp;<strong>macOS Downloads<\/strong>&nbsp;to automatically download new macOS updates from Apple, and prompt the user to install them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select&nbsp;<strong>Critical Updates<\/strong>&nbsp;to automatically install critical macOS updates, including system data files and security updates.<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"2086\" height=\"1486\" class=\"wp-image-83723\" style=\"width: 950px\" src=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Mac_SoftwareUpdatePreferences_policy.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Mac_SoftwareUpdatePreferences_policy.png 2086w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Mac_SoftwareUpdatePreferences_policy-300x214.png 300w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Mac_SoftwareUpdatePreferences_policy-1024x729.png 1024w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Mac_SoftwareUpdatePreferences_policy-768x547.png 768w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Mac_SoftwareUpdatePreferences_policy-1536x1094.png 1536w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Mac_SoftwareUpdatePreferences_policy-2048x1459.png 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2086px) 100vw, 2086px\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>(Optional) Select the <strong>Policy Groups<\/strong> tab. Select one or more policy groups to add this policy to. See <a href=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/support\/create-a-policy#creating-a-policy-group\">Creating a Policy Group<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>(Optional) Select the&nbsp;<strong>Device Groups<\/strong>&nbsp;tab. Select one or more device groups where you&#8217;ll apply this policy. For device groups with multiple OS member types, the policy is applied only to the supported OS.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>(Optional) Select the&nbsp;<strong>Devices<\/strong>&nbsp;tab.
