This policy is powerful enough to disable any combination of the following removable storage classes with an associated level of access:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div corrects any issues you may have occasionally seen when you applied both legacy policies to a device.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Considerations<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>If you created&nbsp;either of the legacy policies,&nbsp;<strong>Disable CD &amp; DVD read access<\/strong>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<strong>Disable USB Storage<\/strong>, they&#8217;re still in effect. However, this means&nbsp;if you want to use the new Windows Removable Storage Policy, you must delete any legacy&nbsp;policies&nbsp;first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-notification-card-wysiwyg notification-card warning\"><div class=\"notification-card-content\"><div class=\"notification-card-icon\"><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/themes\/jumpcloud\/assets\/images\/gutenberg-blocks\/warning-icon.png\" \/><\/p><\/div><div class=\"notification-card-copy is-type-body-default\"><div><strong class=\"notification-card-type\">Warning:<\/strong> \n<p>If you don&#8217;t remove legacy policies and also create the new Windows Removable Storage policy, there&#8217;s a chance that none of the removable storage policies will work and your devices&nbsp;may be vulnerable to data theft and the introduction of malware.<\/p>\n <\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Deleting Legacy Policies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you created\u00a0either of the legacy policies,\u00a0<strong>Disable CD &amp; DVD read access<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Disable USB Storage<\/strong>, they&#8217;re still in effect. This means you can manage them like any other policy. However, if you want to use the new Windows Removable Storage policy instead, you must delete any of these legacy policies first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-notification-card-wysiwyg notification-card warning\"><div class=\"notification-card-content\"><div class=\"notification-card-icon\"><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/themes\/jumpcloud\/assets\/images\/gutenberg-blocks\/warning-icon.png\" \/><\/p><\/div><div class=\"notification-card-copy is-type-body-default\"><div><strong class=\"notification-card-type\">Warning:<\/strong> \n<p>If you don&#8217;t remove legacy policies and also create the new Windows Removable Storage policy, there&#8217;s a chance that none of the removable storage policies will work and your devices&nbsp;may be vulnerable to data theft and the introduction of malware.<\/p>\n <\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-notification-card-wysiwyg notification-card note\"><div class=\"notification-card-content\"><div class=\"notification-card-icon\"><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/themes\/jumpcloud\/assets\/images\/gutenberg-blocks\/note-icon.png\" \/><\/p><\/div><div class=\"notification-card-copy is-type-body-default\"><div><strong class=\"notification-card-type\">Note:<\/strong> \n<ul>\n<li>If you remove either of these legacy policies, you can&#8217;t recreate them. These legacy policies are no longer available in the Admin\u00a0Portal. You must use the new Windows Removable Storage policy instead, which is recommended.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you delete legacy policies and don&#8217;t replace them with the new Windows Removable Storage policy, users can access removable media which poses risks, including data theft and the introduction of malware.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you aren&#8217;t using\u00a0either of the legacy policies,\u00a0<strong>Disable CD &amp; DVD read access<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>Disable USB Storage<\/strong>, you don&#8217;t need to follow these steps before using the new\u00a0Windows Removable Storage policy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n <\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To delete\u00a0legacy Windows removable storage policies:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>Log in to the JumpCloud Admin Portal:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/console.jumpcloud.com\/login\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/console.jumpcloud.com\/login<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to\u00a0<strong>DEVICE MANAGEMENT<\/strong>\u00a0&gt;\u00a0<strong>Policy Management<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select&nbsp;<strong>Disable USB Storage<\/strong>&nbsp;or the name you gave to this policy.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select&nbsp;<strong>Disable CD &amp; DVD read access<\/strong>, or the name you gave to this policy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click&nbsp;<strong>delete<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the Delete&nbsp;policy confirmation screen, click&nbsp;<strong>continue<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>You will see confirmation that the policies\u00a0have\u00a0been deleted.<br>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Creating\u00a0a Windows Removable Storage Policy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When managing removable storage on Windows, you used to have to create two separate policies &#8211; one for CD\/DVD, and the other for USB. Now you can use one policy to prevent users from mounting any combination of the following removable storage classes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>CD &amp; DVD<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Floppy drives<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Removable disks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tape drives<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Windows Portable Devices (WPD)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>After you create the policy, apply it to a device, and reboot the device, then the policy takes effect. When\u00a0a user attaches a type of removable storage that your policy blocks, the device won&#8217;t respond. This means the storage won&#8217;t appear on the user&#8217;s desktop or be listed in Device Manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-notification-card-wysiwyg notification-card note\"><div class=\"notification-card-content\"><div class=\"notification-card-icon\"><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/themes\/jumpcloud\/assets\/images\/gutenberg-blocks\/note-icon.png\" \/><\/p><\/div><div class=\"notification-card-copy is-type-body-default\"><div><strong class=\"notification-card-type\">Note:<\/strong> \n<ul>\n<li>If you created&nbsp;either of the legacy policies,&nbsp;<strong>Disable CD &amp; DVD read access<\/strong>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<strong>Disable USB Storage<\/strong>, they&#8217;re still in effect. Before you assign a policy, you can follow the instructions in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/support\/create-a-device-group\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Create a Device Group<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n <\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To create a Windows removable storage policy:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>Log in to the JumpCloud Admin\u00a0Portal:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/console.jumpcloud.com\/login\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/console.jumpcloud.com\/login<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to\u00a0<strong>DEVICE MANAGEMENT<\/strong>\u00a0&gt;\u00a0<strong>Policy Management<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click (<strong>&nbsp;+&nbsp;<\/strong>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the <strong>Configure New Policy<\/strong>\u00a0panel, select\u00a0<strong>Windows<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scroll down to find&nbsp;<strong>Removable Storage<\/strong>, click&nbsp;<strong>configure<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In&nbsp;<strong>POLICY NAME<\/strong>&nbsp;you can&nbsp;type in a new title if necessary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In&nbsp;<strong>Settings<\/strong>, select the options that apply to your fleet needs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To apply the policy to one or more devices, select the&nbsp;<strong>Devices<\/strong>&nbsp;tab. Next to&nbsp;<strong>Device&nbsp;Name<\/strong>, select the options for all the devices where you want to apply this policy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To apply the policy to a defined group of devices, select the&nbsp;<strong>Device Groups&nbsp;<\/strong>tab. Next to&nbsp;<strong>Device&nbsp;Group Name<\/strong>, select the options for all the groups where you want to apply this policy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click&nbsp;<strong>save policy<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Restart all devices where you applied the removable storage policy.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Viewing the Windows Policy Status<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After a policy is created and saved, it may take a few minutes for the policy to be enforced on the device. When the policy is running, you can view its status to determine\u00a0if the policy has been successfully applied or it it requires your attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To view the policy status<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>Log in to the JumpCloud Admin Portal:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/console.jumpcloud.com\/login\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/console.jumpcloud.com\/login<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to\u00a0<strong>DEVICE MANAGEMENT<\/strong>\u00a0&gt;<strong>\u00a0Policy Management<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click the&nbsp;<strong>Removable Storage&nbsp;<\/strong>policy&nbsp;that you just created.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click&nbsp;<strong>Status<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To see the last Result Log for a device where this policy is applied, in the results list next to a device, click&nbsp;<strong>View<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-notification-card-wysiwyg notification-card note\"><div class=\"notification-card-content\"><div class=\"notification-card-icon\"><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/themes\/jumpcloud\/assets\/images\/gutenberg-blocks\/note-icon.png\" \/><\/p><\/div><div class=\"notification-card-copy is-type-body-default\"><div><strong class=\"notification-card-type\">Note:<\/strong> \n<p>If any errors occur, they are listed in Exit Status. If you have an Exit Status of <strong>0<\/strong>, no errors have occurred when applying or enforcing this policy.<\/p>\n <\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a><\/a><strong>Deleting&nbsp;a Windows Removable Storage Policy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are\u00a0several ways you can permit users to access removable storage devices after creating a policy to block access:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>If you want to allow users on a specific device&nbsp;to access storage devices, you can remove that device from the policy without removing the policy itself.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can also remove groups of devices from the&nbsp;policy without removing the policy itself.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To allow all Windows devices managed by JumpCloud to access removable storage devices, you can remove the policy completely.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-notification-card-wysiwyg notification-card warning\"><div class=\"notification-card-content\"><div class=\"notification-card-icon\"><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/themes\/jumpcloud\/assets\/images\/gutenberg-blocks\/warning-icon.png\" \/><\/p><\/div><div class=\"notification-card-copy is-type-body-default\"><div><strong class=\"notification-card-type\">Warning:<\/strong> \n<p>Remember that allowing users access to removable media poses risks, including data theft and the introduction\u00a0of malware.<\/p>\n <\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To allow access to Windows removable storage:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>Log in to the JumpCloud Admin Portal:&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/console.jumpcloud.com\/login\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/console.jumpcloud.com\/login<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to&nbsp;<strong>DEVICE MANAGEMENT<\/strong>&nbsp;&gt;&nbsp;<strong>Policy Management<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you want to remove devices from the policy, click&nbsp;<strong>Removable Storage<\/strong>&nbsp;or the name that you gave this policy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to&nbsp;<strong>DEVICE MANAGEMENT&nbsp;<\/strong>&gt;<strong>&nbsp;Devices<\/strong>. Clear the options for all devices that you want to remove. Click&nbsp;<strong>save policy<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you want to remove groups from the policy, click&nbsp;<strong>Removable Storage<\/strong>&nbsp;or the name that you gave this policy. Select the&nbsp;<strong>Device&nbsp;Groups&nbsp;<\/strong>tab. Clear the options for all groups that you want to remove.
