{"id":115365,"date":"2024-09-11T16:27:27","date_gmt":"2024-09-11T20:27:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/?post_type=support&#038;p=115365"},"modified":"2024-09-11T16:27:08","modified_gmt":"2024-09-11T20:27:08","slug":"delay-or-block-sequoia","status":"publish","type":"support","link":"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/support\/delay-or-block-sequoia","title":{"rendered":"Create a Mac Policy to Delay or Block Sequoia"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In September 2024, Apple will release the latest version of their operating system, macOS 15 Sequoia, to the general public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Important: If you&#8217;re not yet ready for macOS 15 Sequoia, there are two settings to deliver to your MDM-enrolled macOS devices to prevent it from being installed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To fully block the upgrade to macOS 15 Sequoia, configure two settings<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>To prevent the update from appearing on individual devices fromin <strong>System Settings<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Software Update<\/strong>, use <a href=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/support\/create-a-mac-policy-to-delay-or-block-sonoma#delay-major-macos-upgrades\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Delay Major macOS Software Upgrades<\/a>. Users with this policy set will not see macOS 15 Sequoia as an available upgrade.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-notification-card-wysiwyg notification-card note\"><div class=\"notification-card-content\"><div class=\"notification-card-icon\"><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/themes\/jumpcloud\/assets\/images\/gutenberg-blocks\/note-icon.png\" \/><\/p><\/div><div class=\"notification-card-copy is-type-body-default\"><div><strong class=\"notification-card-type\">Note:<\/strong> \n<p>Enforcement of this setting will depend if you&#8217;re currently using Patch Management Policies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>If you\u2019re using patch policies, configure this via <strong>Policy Management<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Patch Management <\/strong>&gt; <strong>Defer Upgrade Releases<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you\u2019re not using patch policies, configure this via the <strong>Delay Major MacOS Software Upgrades<\/strong> policy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n <\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Restrict the macOS Sequoia installer from running using the Block macOS Sequoia Installer Policy. Users are allowed to download the installer, but the installer will be blocked from launching.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Prerequisites<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>macOS devices must be enrolled in MDM to deliver patch policies. See <a href=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/support\/get-started-mdm\">Get Started: Apple MDM<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-delay-major-macos-upgrades\">Delay Major macOS Upgrades<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Delay macOS Upgrades Using Patch Management Policies<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>JumpCloud\u2019s patch policies (<strong>Policy Managemen<\/strong>t &gt; <strong>Patch Management<\/strong>) help organizations manage their operating system versions, including managing new major version releases. The <strong>Major Upgrade Settings<\/strong> section allows you to specify a delay of up to 90 days for new major versions of macOS. See <a href=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/support\/create-a-macos-patch-policy\">Create a macOS Patch Policy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To add a delay, make sure <strong>Defer Upgrade Releases<\/strong> is selected, and then set a number of days from 1 to 90. The default is 30 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"584\" src=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/patch-major-upgrade-settings-1024x584.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-115464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/patch-major-upgrade-settings-1024x584.png 1024w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/patch-major-upgrade-settings-300x171.png 300w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/patch-major-upgrade-settings-768x438.png 768w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/patch-major-upgrade-settings-1536x876.png 1536w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/patch-major-upgrade-settings-2048x1167.png 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For each policy in your patch rings (Vanguard, Early Adoption, General Adoption, Late Adoption), update the <strong>Major Upgrade Settings<\/strong> if you need to delay macOS 15 Sequoia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-notification-card-wysiwyg notification-card important\"><div class=\"notification-card-content\"><div class=\"notification-card-icon\"><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/themes\/jumpcloud\/assets\/images\/gutenberg-blocks\/important-icon.png\" \/><\/p><\/div><div class=\"notification-card-copy is-type-body-default\"><div><strong class=\"notification-card-type\">Important:<\/strong> \n<p>After macOS 15 Sequoia is approved for use within your organization, uncheck <strong>Defer Upgrade Releases<\/strong> and allow upgrades to proceed as normal.<\/p>\n <\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-automatic-action-changes\">Automatic Action Changes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>JumpCloud has implemented updated automatic actions for devices running older versions of macOS, which will allow admins to target older versions of macOS to upgrade automatically to macOS 15 Sequoia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Delay macOS Upgrades Without Patch Management Policies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For customers not using Patch Management, you can access Apple\u2019s Delay Major OS Upgrade settings through JumpCloud&#8217;s <strong>Delay Major macOS Software Upgrade<\/strong>s policy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>To create a Delay Major macOS Software Upgrades policy:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>Log into your <a href=\"https:\/\/console.jumpcloud.com\/\">JumpCloud Admin Portal<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to <strong>DEVICE MANAGEMENT<\/strong> &gt; <strong>Policy Management<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the <strong>All<\/strong> tab, click (<strong>+<\/strong>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the <strong>New Policy<\/strong> panel, select the <strong>Mac<\/strong> tab.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the <strong>Delay Major MacOS Software Upgrades<\/strong> policy from the list, then click <strong>configure<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>(Optional) Add details or context regarding this policy to the <strong>Policy Notes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under <strong>Settings<\/strong>, select <strong>Force Delayed Major Software Updates<\/strong> to delay major OS software updates from appearing for the length of time you specify in <strong>Software Upgrade Delay Days<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For <strong>Software Upgrade Delay Days<\/strong>, specify the number of days to delay the software upgrade. The minimum value is <strong>1<\/strong> and the maximum is <strong>90<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>(Optional) Select the <strong>Policy Groups<\/strong> tab and select one or more policy groups that will include this policy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the <strong>Device Groups<\/strong> tab and select one or more device groups where you\u2019ll apply this policy. For device groups with multiple OS member types, the policy is applied only to the supported OS.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select the <strong>Devices<\/strong> tab and select one or more devices where you\u2019ll apply this policy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>save<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Block macOS Sequoia Installer Policy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This policy prevents the macOS Sequoia installer from running on devices.
