That\u2019s why we\u2019ve come up with this checklist for things to consider while preparing a device for remote work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Before you start evaluating the devices themselves, first start with your identity management\/directory infrastructure to ensure that your end users can securely access the IT resources they need to get their jobs done:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Do you currently have a directory or IdP in place today?\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Is your current directory reliable and available in case of potential outage (power, no on-prem presence\/etc)?\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Does your IdP have active dashboards showing current resource states?\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Is your current directory model available for employees if they are mandated to work in office or from home? <\/span>\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Does your directory authN to any OS? What about SaaS apps and IaaS?<\/span>\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Does your current directory have all configurations displayed in a single window?<\/span>\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  How many passwords are users managing between their IT resources and applications?\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 40px\">\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Are they using strong, long, unique passwords?<\/span>\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 40px\">\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Are you disallowing previous passwords from being used during reset? <\/span>\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 40px\">\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Are your resources also engaging MFA? (more on this later) <\/span>\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 40px\">\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\"> Do you have anti-phishing frameworks in place?<\/span>\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Now onto questions about how you\u2019re managing devices:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Does the machine have an up-to-date OS and applications?\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Are you aware of the device\u2019s configurations?\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 40px\">\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Can you remotely make changes to those configurations as necessary?\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Is the admin in control of the user account on the device?\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Is the login window active?  \n<span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Can the admin remotely give a user &#8216;Admin&#8217; privs to perhaps install software when remote?\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 40px\">\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Otherwise, can you push those updates using a package manager or via the command line or other scripting? <\/span>\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  If need be, can you suspend access to the device or even remote wipe?\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">With these basics out of the way, let\u2019s get into security requirements:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Is the machine configured in a way to ensure best security?\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 40px\">\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Is antivirus\/anti-malware installed? What about a firewall?<\/span>\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 40px\">\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Can users change their passwords on their machine to avoid phishing?<\/span>\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 40px\">\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Is the system protected by multi-factor authentication (MFA)? <\/span>\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 40px\">\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Is full disk encryption (FDE) available? <\/span>\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 80px\">\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Is the data on the machine sensitive (e.g. source code? Financial?)<\/span>\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\"> Can you enable screen lock so someone does not jump on the box and commandeer it?  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Other policies to protect it:\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 40px\">\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Guest Account <\/span>\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 40px\">\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Disable USB Mass Storage <\/span>\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 40px\">\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\"> Disable Control Panel or System Preference options <\/span>\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 40px\">\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\"> Logon Window <\/span>\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Outside of direct system setup, employees need to use their workstation to remotely access resources. With that, let\u2019s talk access control:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Do you have a VPN to protect the transmission of data from the machine across the home or public network?\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Is the VPN using the same login\/creds as the user&#8217;s machine, as opposed to a shared account?<\/span>\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 40px\">\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\"> Is it backed by MFA?<\/span>\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\"> What protocols are you using to enable resource access, or is it solely through browser login?  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 40px\">\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  SAML, LDAP, SSH, etc. <\/span>\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 40px\">\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\"> Do your service providers integrate with your IdP? <\/span>\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 40px\">\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\"> Is access to apps, infra, files gated by MFA? <\/span>\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">With that settled, one of the last things you need to worry about is how you&#8217;ll be supporting your end users:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Can you remote access their computer via RMM or similar tooling?\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Do you have support ticketing software, or do you handle requests on a need-be basis?\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Do you have to reset their passwords, or do they have self-service?\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Do you have a cloud-based storage application so users\u2019 files are cloud hosted and shared securely?\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 40px\">\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Do you have sync mechanisms to help sync local to cloud file stores?<\/span>\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Are they trained on security best practices, including phishing prevention and network security while working from home?\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Do you have reporting software on system statuses, applications installed, and other information about your company\u2019s systems?\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n<label class=\"container\">\n  <input type=\"checkbox\">  Do you have appropriate logging and notifications when users have issues or are locked out of resources?\n  <span class=\"checkmark\"><\/span><\/label><br>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of these considerations merely scratch the surface of what IT admins need to do to ensure that end user devices are securely equipped to function remotely.
