It comprises three components (the Apache web server, MariaDB or MySQL relational database, and the PHP scripting language) residing on an operating system (Linux). You can also confirm that Apache is working as expected by browsing the public IP of the Amazon Linux 2 EC2 instance as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>&nbsp;http:\/\/ec2-instance-public-ip<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"221\" src=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lamp7.png\" alt=\"How to Install LAMP Server on Amazon Linux 2\" class=\"wp-image-58992\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lamp7.png 512w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lamp7-300x129.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note that AWS walks you through additional steps, prompting you to restrict admin access to specific IP addresses (among other potential security configurations) to secure EC2 instances. It is recommended that you read through their access control options carefully and understand their intention and impact on your specific use case before moving on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the installation of Apache out of the way, let\u2019s head over to the next step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"step2\"><strong>Step 2: Install MariaDB Database Server<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mariadb.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MariaDB<\/a> is a hugely popular open source relational database that is a fork of MySQL. It was developed by the original developers of MySQL right after Oracle expressed its interest in acquiring MySQL \u2014 which it did in 2010. Although MySQL does remain a popular choice by many, this tutorial has opted to follow the MariaDB route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The MariaDB database is built to provide stability, reliability, and the latest security features required in production workloads. Some of the cool features that ship with MariaDB include advanced clustering with Galera Cluster 4, high-performance storage engines such as InnoDB, seamless scaling, and support for big data analytics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To install MariaDB, run the command:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>$ sudo yum install mariadb-server<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"149\" src=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lamp8.png\" alt=\"How to Install LAMP Server on Amazon Linux 2\" class=\"wp-image-58993\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lamp8.png 512w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lamp8-300x87.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The command installs the MariaDB server alongside other Perl dependencies that are required for it to function as expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"244\" src=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lamp9.png\" alt=\"How to Install LAMP Server on Amazon Linux 2\" class=\"wp-image-58994\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lamp9.png 512w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lamp9-300x143.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Once installed, start the MariaDB service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>$ sudo systemctl start mariadb<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And like the Apache web server, enable it to start on boot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>$ sudo systemctl enable mariadb<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"137\" src=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lamp10.png\" alt=\"How to Install LAMP Server on Amazon Linux 2\" class=\"wp-image-58995\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lamp10.png 512w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lamp10-300x80.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, check to confirm that MariaDB is running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>$ sudo systemctl status mariadb<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"156\" src=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lamp11.png\" alt=\"How to Install LAMP Server on Amazon Linux 2\" class=\"wp-image-58996\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lamp11.png 512w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lamp11-300x91.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The default settings that come with MariaDB are not secure and the database engine is prone to breaches. As such, you need to take an extra step to harden it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To harden MariaDB and tighten its security, run the following script:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>$ sudo mysql_secure_installation<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By default, MariaDB allows you to log in as root without providing a password \u2014 which is risky for obvious reasons. To remediate this, be sure to set a root password for MariaDB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"254\" src=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lamp12.png\" alt=\"How to Install LAMP Server on Amazon Linux 2\" class=\"wp-image-58997\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lamp12.png 512w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lamp12-300x149.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For the remaining prompts, press \u201cY\u201d to remove anonymous users, drop remote root login requests, and remove the test database which makes the database server prone to cyberattacks. From here, you can perform database operations such as running queries and updating tables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"276\" src=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lamp14.png\" alt=\"How to Install LAMP Server on Amazon Linux 2\" class=\"wp-image-58999\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lamp14.png 512w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/lamp14-300x162.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"step3\">Step 3: Install PHP 8.1 and PHP Extensions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time of writing this guide, PHP 8.1 is the latest version of PHP.&nbsp; We will install it from the <strong>amazon-linux-extras<\/strong> repository.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get started, add the EPEL repository as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>$ sudo yum install https:\/\/dl.fedoraproject.org\/pub\/epel\/epel-release-latest-7.noarch.rpm -y<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, add the REMI repository.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>$ sudo yum install&nbsp; https:\/\/rpms.remirepo.net\/enterprise\/remi-release-7.rpm -y<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sure to update the yum cache.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>$ sudo yum makecache<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the cache is updated, install the <strong>yum-utils<\/strong> package.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>$ sudo yum install yum-utils<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, confirm the availability of PHP 8.x from the <strong>amazon-linux-extras<\/strong> repository.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>$ sudo&nbsp; amazon-linux-extras | grep php<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should get the following output which confirms the availability of PHP 8.0 and PHP 8.1 in the repository.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"830\" height=\"160\" src=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/PHP-update-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-76429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/PHP-update-1.png 830w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/PHP-update-1-300x58.png 300w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/PHP-update-1-768x148.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 830px) 100vw, 830px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The next step is to enable PHP 8.1 from the <strong>amazon-linux-extras<\/strong> repository.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>$ sudo yum-config-manager &#8211;disable &#8216;remi-php*&#8217;<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>$ sudo amazon-linux-extras enable php8.1&nbsp;<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once enabled, now you can install PHP 8.1 with associated extensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>$ sudo yum clean<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>$ sudo yum install php-{curl,pear,gd,mbstring,bcmath,pdo,mbstring,mysqlnd,json,xml,zip,common,cgi,intl}<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now confirm the version of PHP installed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>$ php \u2013v<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"633\" height=\"139\" src=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/PHP-update-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-76428\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/PHP-update-2.png 633w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/PHP-update-2-300x66.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 633px) 100vw, 633px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, you can verify the PHP version installed by creating a sample PHP info file in the document root directory as shown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>$ sudo nano \/var\/www\/html\/info.php<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paste the following lines:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>&lt;?php&nbsp;<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>phpinfo();&nbsp;<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>?&gt;<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Save the changes. Then restart the Apache web server.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><code>$ sudo systemcl restart httpd<\/code><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now open your browser and go to the following address:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/server-ip\/info.php\"><strong>http:\/\/server-ip\/info.php<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should get the following webpage displaying your PHP version and a host of other PHP-related information.
