{"id":20480,"date":"2018-09-04T15:00:47","date_gmt":"2018-09-04T21:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.jumpcloud.com\/?p=20480"},"modified":"2019-11-25T17:06:34","modified_gmt":"2019-11-25T17:06:34","slug":"renaming-an-existing-user-on-macos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/blog\/renaming-an-existing-user-on-macos","title":{"rendered":"Renaming an Existing User on macOS\u00ae"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this blog post, we will be discussing how to use JumpCloud<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>\u2019s macOS<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> account rename utility to rename an existing macOS<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> user account as laid out in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/1j00Bl0NpFE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our tutorial video below<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Renaming an Existing User Account on macOS\u00ae | JumpCloud Tutorial\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1j00Bl0NpFE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This utility can be leveraged by Mac<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> admins in situations where existing local macOS account usernames need to be updated due to an employee\u2019s marriage and legal name change, or in any other scenario where an existing macOS account username needs to be altered.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As it relates to JumpCloud, this script is designed to prescribe a clear path for admins who need to update an existing local account macOS username to an employee\u2019s JumpCloud username prior to account takeover by the JumpCloud agent to ensure that account takeover will occur.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a reminder in order for the JumpCloud agent to take over an existing local account on macOS, the JumpCloud username must match identically with an existing local account username on the system. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rename script for macOS can be found <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/TheJumpCloud\/support\/blob\/master\/scripts\/macos\/RenameMacUserNameAndHomeDirectory.sh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After downloading the script on the system that has an account which needs to be renamed, fire up the terminal application using a local account with administrative privileges.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the terminal, navigate to the location of the downloaded script using the \u2018cd\u2019 (change directory) command. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After navigating to the location of the downloaded script, run the below command and substitute the current username name and the new name of the user account into the respective parameter locations. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-preformatted\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sudo sh RenameMacUserNameAndHomeDirectory.sh CurrentUserame NewUsername<\/span><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the script is run, the JumpCloud system will restart, and the account can be accessed via the user\u2019s existing password. After the username is updated, a JumpCloud admins can bind a JumpCloud user that has a matching username to the system and the agent will takeover the renamed local account and push down the users JumpCloud password to the system. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That completes the renaming of the existing user on macOS!
