Medical data (61%) and contact data (57%) follow the priority list.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies that do not ask for information unrelated to their product are trusted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/risk-and-resilience\/our-insights\/the-consumer-data-opportunity-and-the-privacy-imperative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">52%<\/a> of consumers, while companies that respond quickly to hacks and breaches are trusted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/risk-and-resilience\/our-insights\/the-consumer-data-opportunity-and-the-privacy-imperative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">50%<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Consumer Trust and Data Privacy\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.com\/c\/dam\/en_us\/about\/doing_business\/trust-center\/docs\/cisco-consumer-privacy-survey-2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cisco\u2019s 2022 Consumer Privacy Survey<\/a>, 79% of respondents stated that it is too hard for them to understand how companies use their data.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On the other hand, 76% of respondents in the same survey said they wouldn\u2019t buy from a company they don&#8217;t trust with their data, and 81% believe that how an organization treats personal data indicates how it views and respects its customers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/iapp.org\/news\/a\/consumers-say-trust-depends-on-transparency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">39%<\/a> of consumers prefer clear information from companies about data use, while 43% believe that lack of transparency makes it difficult to protect their data effectively.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Consumer-Cyber-Readiness-Report_10.4.22.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">51%<\/a> of consumers use &#8220;private&#8221; or &#8220;incognito&#8221; mode in their browser to hide their online activity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.truata.com\/resources\/report\/global-consumer-state-of-mind-report-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">60%<\/a> of consumers say they&#8217;d spend more money with a brand they trust with their personal information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nortonlifelock.com\/us\/en\/newsroom\/press-kits\/2022-norton-cyber-safety-insights-report-special-release-online-creeping\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Norton 2022 Cyber Safety Report<\/a>, 26% of adults enabled multi-factor authentication on select accounts\/devices.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.netwrix.com\/download\/collaterals\/2022%20Netwrix%20Cloud%20Data%20Security%20Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">80%<\/a> of companies store sensitive data in the cloud.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Data Privacy and AI<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>40% of consumers see AI as a beneficial tool for improving their lives, while 72% believe organizations must use AI ethically and responsibly. (Cisco)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Taking the Opposite Road &#8211; A Corporate Perspective<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cisco.com\/c\/dam\/en_us\/about\/doing_business\/trust-center\/docs\/cisco-consumer-privacy-report-2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cisco Data Privacy Benchmark Study 2023<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>95% of respondents recognize privacy as a business necessity, up from 90% last year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>94% believe their customers won&#8217;t buy from them if data isn&#8217;t properly protected, an increase from 90% in the previous year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encouragingly, 36% of organizations report a return on privacy investments that&#8217;s at least twice their spending, suggesting that privacy protection can be a sound financial investment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>MFA is used by 69% of companies. Interestingly, a recent JumpCloud study found that small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) use MFA more frequently: <a href=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/resources\/q1-2024-it-trends-for-small-and-medium-sized-enterprises-smes\">83%<\/a> require employees to use MFA to access all of their resources.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cloud backups are used by 63% of companies, while encryption is used by 62%.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is estimated that the average organization gets 1.8 times more value from data privacy than it spends. 36% of organizations are getting returns at least twice their spending, with many getting returns of three to five times their investment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Data Breaches: An Unwanted Reality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ibm.com\/2021-07-28-IBM-Report-Cost-of-a-Data-Breach-Hits-Record-High-During-Pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">44%<\/a> of data breaches include customer names, email addresses, and passwords&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2023, the average cost of a data breach was a staggering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/account\/reg\/us-en\/signup?formid=urx-52258\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$4.45 million<\/a> worldwide.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When comparing breaches with and without a remote workforce, the average cost of a breach with a remote workforce was an additional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/account\/reg\/us-en\/signup?formid=urx-52258\">$173,074. <\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/cpl.thalesgroup.com\/data-trust-index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">11%<\/a> of companies took up to 6 months to inform consumers about a data breach.
