It enhances website and application performance by distributing workloads across multiple backend web servers. This results in reduced response times, increased throughput, and high availability.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although HAProxy is free and open source, there is also a commercial option called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haproxy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HAProxy Enterprise<\/a>. It includes a suite of add-ons, professional services, and 24\/7 support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of which version makes the most sense for your organization, HAProxy provides the following load balancing algorithms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Round robin<\/strong>. Web traffic is sequentially distributed across each backend server, with each server assigned a unique number.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Least connections<\/strong>. Incoming requests are sent to the server with the least number of active connections. This comes in handy when you have a set of servers with varying processing capabilities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Least time<\/strong>. Incoming requests are channeled to the server with the fastest response time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Source IP hash<\/strong>. The algorithm uses a hash function to map incoming requests from client IPs to a backend server. For instance, requests from the same IP are routed to the same backend server.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Random with two choices<\/strong>. Two backend servers are selected randomly and requests are sent to either of them by employing the least connections algorithm.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In this guide, we will demonstrate how to install and configure HAProxy on RHEL 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"image is-16by9\">\n<iframe class=\"has-ratio\" width=\"300\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IO3WiW_i41Q?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"heading1\"><strong>Lab Setup<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To demonstrate how HAProxy works, we have our lab environment setup as shown:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Node<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Hostname<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>IP address<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>HAProxy<\/td><td>ha-proxy-rhel9&nbsp;<\/td><td>&nbsp; 10.128.0.6<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Web Server 1<\/td><td>web-server-01&nbsp;<\/td><td>&nbsp; 10.128.0.7<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Web Server 2<\/td><td>web-server-02&nbsp;<\/td><td>&nbsp; 10.128.0.8<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"step1\"><strong>Step 1: Configure Hostnames (All Nodes)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step is to configure the hostnames for all the nodes. Therefore, log into each of the nodes and run the following commands:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>HAProxy Load Balancer<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-code-block code-block\"><div class=\"code-block-snippet is-type-body-default\">\n<p>$ sudo hostnamectl set-hostname ha-proxy-rhel9<br>$ exec bash<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Web Server 1<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-code-block code-block\"><div class=\"code-block-snippet is-type-body-default\">\n<p>$ sudo hostnamectl set-hostname web-server-01<br>$ exec bash<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Web Server 2<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-code-block code-block\"><div class=\"code-block-snippet is-type-body-default\">\n<p>$ sudo hostnamectl set-hostname web-server-02<br>$ exec bash<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"step2\"><strong>Step 2: Configure \/etc\/hosts file (All Nodes)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the hostnames have been configured, the next step is to set up hostname resolution so that the three nodes can communicate seamlessly in the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do so, you need to configure the <strong>\/etc\/hosts <\/strong>file in each node.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-code-block code-block\"><div class=\"code-block-snippet is-type-body-default\">\n<p>$ sudo vim \/etc\/hosts<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, add the following entries to the file:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-code-block code-block\"><div class=\"code-block-snippet is-type-body-default\">\n<p>10.128.0.6 &nbsp; ha-proxy-rhel9<br>10.128.0.7 &nbsp; web-server-01&nbsp;<br>10.128.0.8 &nbsp; web-server-02<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Save the changes and exit the file. Ensure you can ping nodes from each node using the defined hostnames.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From the output, you can see that we\u2019re able to ping the web servers from the HAProxy load balancer. You should get the same feedback when trying to ping the rest of the nodes from either of the web servers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"399\" src=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/1-5.png\" alt=\"tutorial code\" class=\"wp-image-106552\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/1-5.png 512w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/1-5-300x234.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"step3\"><strong>Step 3: Install HAProxy on RHEL 9 Load Balancer<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Having configured the hostnames and hostname resolution for all the nodes, the next step is to install the HAProxy package on the load balancer node.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, update the system packages to their latest versions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-code-block code-block\"><div class=\"code-block-snippet is-type-body-default\">\n<p>$ sudo dnf update<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>HAProxy is available from the default RHEL 9 repositories. To install it, run the following command:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-code-block code-block\"><div class=\"code-block-snippet is-type-body-default\">\n<p>$ sudo dnf install haproxy -y<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"158\" src=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/2-5.png\" alt=\"tutorial code\" class=\"wp-image-106550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/2-5.png 512w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/2-5-300x93.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Once installed, confirm the version installed as shown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-code-block code-block\"><div class=\"code-block-snippet is-type-body-default\">\n<p>$ rpm -q<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, you can pass the -i option to provide more in-depth information about the package installed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-code-block code-block\"><div class=\"code-block-snippet is-type-body-default\">\n<p>$ rpm -qi<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The output provides a wealth of information including the name, version, release, architecture, and installation date among other details. From the output, you can see that we have installed HAProxy version 2.4.22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"237\" src=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/3-5.png\" alt=\"tutorial code\" class=\"wp-image-106553\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/3-5.png 512w, https:\/\/jumpcloud.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/3-5-300x139.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"step4\"><strong>Step 4: Configure HAProxy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-notification-card notification-card note\"><div class=\"notification-card-content\"><div class=\"notification-card-icon\"><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/themes\/jumpcloud\/assets\/images\/gutenberg-blocks\/note-icon.png\"\/><\/p><\/div><div class=\"notification-card-copy is-type-body-default\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> Consult with a cybersecurity professional to configure multilayer security for HAProxy. Topics should include API and web application security such as a Web Application Firewall (WAF), bot protection, or distributed denial of service protections. Access control, data protection, and system visibility are important considerations when deploying HAProxy. Other options are to pair HAProxy with pfSense and a content delivery network (CDN).<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The next step is to configure HAProxy to serve requests to the backend web servers as expected. But first, make a backup copy of the HAProxy configuration file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-code-block code-block\"><div class=\"code-block-snippet is-type-body-default\">\n<p>$ sudo cp \/etc\/haproxy\/haproxy.cfg{,.orig}<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We need to configure the following key sections:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Front-end settings <\/strong>to<strong> <\/strong>specify the sockets coming from client connections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Back-end settings<\/strong> to specify the HAProxy server IP address and the load balancer algorithm.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Front-End Settings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For the front-end settings, navigate to the \u2018<strong># Front load balancer<\/strong>\u2019 section and ensure you have the following lines of code. To do so, follow the commands shown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-code-block code-block\"><div class=\"code-block-snippet is-type-body-default\">\n<p>$ sudo setenforce 0<br><br>$ sudo sed -i &#8216;s\/SELINUX=enforcing\/SELINUX=permissive\/g&#8217; \/etc\/selinux\/config<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"step6\"><strong>Step 6: Configure Rsyslog<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On modern Linux distributions, Rsyslog is a utility that provides support for logging. It\u2019s a new and modern way of collecting and centralizing logs generated by various services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To keep tabs on HAProxy\u2019s performance, it\u2019s recommended that you configure log files that will store logs generated by HAProxy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, access the Rsyslog configuration file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-code-block code-block\"><div class=\"code-block-snippet is-type-body-default\">\n<p>$ sudo vim \/etc\/rsyslog.conf<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Add the following lines:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-code-block code-block\"><div class=\"code-block-snippet is-type-body-default\">\n<p>local2.=info &nbsp; &nbsp; \/var\/log\/haproxy-access.log<br><br>local2.notice&nbsp; &nbsp; \/var\/log\/haproxy-info.log<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Save the changes and exit the configuration file.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"step7\"><strong>Step 7: Start and Enable HAProxy<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Once all the changes are done, start and enable the HAProxy daemon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-code-block code-block\"><div class=\"code-block-snippet is-type-body-default\">\n<p>$ sudo systemctl start haproxy<br><br>$ sudo systemctl enable haproxy<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"step8\"><strong>Step 8: Install Apache HTTP Web Server on Web Servers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The next step is to configure the backend web servers. You should be able to receive traffic from both backend web servers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, access the HAProxy web address:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/haproxy-ip_address\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">http:\/\/HAProxy-IP_Address<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the first attempt, you should see the webpage from either of the web servers.
