It is a free and open source server environment that is fast, scalable, flexible, and primarily used for the development of fast and robust server-side web applications.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Node.js uses an asynchronous, event-driven model that allows it to handle heavy I\/O operations, so it is ideal for developing real-time and data-intensive applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Node.js is mostly used in the development of the following apps or services:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Backend API services<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Microservices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Real-time chat apps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Browser games<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High-traffic web apps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>IoT apps<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In this tutorial, we\u2019ll explore how to install Node.js 20 on Rocky Linux 9 or RHEL 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"image is-16by9\">\n<iframe class=\"has-ratio\" width=\"300\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/36GzcuvvsaM?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"step1\">Step 1: Install NVM on Rocky Linux 9 or RHEL 9<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-notification-card-wysiwyg notification-card note\"><div class=\"notification-card-content\"><div class=\"notification-card-icon\"><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/themes\/jumpcloud\/assets\/images\/gutenberg-blocks\/note-icon.png\"\/><\/p><\/div><div class=\"notification-card-copy is-type-body-default\"><div><strong class=\"notification-card-type\">Note:<\/strong> \n<p>Some developers also like to use <a href=\"https:\/\/volta.sh\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Volta<\/a> for version management.<\/p>\n <\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/nvm-sh\/nvm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Node Version Manager<\/a>, also abbreviated as NVM, is a tool for managing various Node versions on your device. This is beneficial in case you have different projects that may require different versions of Node. The script clones the nvm repository to the <strong>~\/.nvm<\/strong> directory in the user&#8217;s home directory. It also appends the nvm and bash_completion source string lines to the <strong>~\/.bashrc<\/strong> file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sure to source the <strong>~\/.bashrc<\/strong> file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-code-block code-block\"><div class=\"code-block-snippet is-type-body-default\">\n<p><strong>$ source ~\/.bashrc<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>NVM is installed per user and called per-shell. As mentioned earlier, different projects might require different versions of Node.js.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To check the current installed Node.js versions, run the command:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-code-block code-block\"><div class=\"code-block-snippet is-type-body-default\">\n<p><strong>$ nvm ls<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You will get the following output that shows the current enabled version (appearing in green and indicated with a green arrow) and the default version. For illustration, we will create a simple \u2018Hello World\u2019 application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-notification-card notification-card note\"><div class=\"notification-card-content\"><div class=\"notification-card-icon\"><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/themes\/jumpcloud\/assets\/images\/gutenberg-blocks\/note-icon.png\"\/><\/p><\/div><div class=\"notification-card-copy is-type-body-default\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> You will need access to firewall configuration for port 3000 to execute this example as written.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>On the terminal, create an empty JS file using the Vim editor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cgb-code-block code-block\"><div class=\"code-block-snippet is-type-body-default\">\n<p><strong>$ vim my_helloworld_app.js<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Paste the following lines of code. If you press CTRL + C, the application is terminated. In this section, we will show you how to run it in the background and free up the terminal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To achieve this, we will use the <strong>pm2<\/strong> global NPM module. PM2, an acronym for process manager, is a production-ready Node.js process manager. It provides key functionalities such as keeping applications running without interruption and reloading them with zero downtime.
