More often than not, IT is an art of working with what you\u2019ve got. Usually, IT professionals are doing their best with the IT infrastructure in front of them, whether it\u2019s one they\u2019ve been working on for years or one that\u2019s been bestowed upon them. Completely wiping the slate clean and starting over isn\u2019t usually an option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, having an idea of what your ideal environment might look like can act as a helpful north star as you move through your career. Understanding your \u201cideal state\u201d can offer direction as you encounter decisions, problems, and opportunities to effect change (even small change).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, Dan Gericke, named a \u201cTop Cybersecurity Voice\u201d by LinkedIn, posed this question to his LinkedIn connections. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/activity-7128634031558066177-Flw6\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_ios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">LinkedIn poll<\/a>, he asked, <strong><em>\u201cIf you could start over from scratch when it comes to your company\u2019s IT infrastructure, which Identity Provider would you choose today?\u201d<\/em><\/strong> Here\u2019s how people answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is the IT Professional\u2019s Dream IAM Solution?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the poll, JumpCloud won by a significant margin. Fifty percent of the 349 voters answered JumpCloud. Okta, the second most popular choice, received about half the votes that JumpCloud did, and Microsoft Entra ID trailed close behind Okta. Only 4% of voters said they would choose a different solution, like One Identity, KeyCloak, or others.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-us.googleusercontent.com\/ejclo85JYiasMBn5YQ6dtLr_DpfUMtXs915LXnCeBvvx9F-4UFyD7_7ab7ZcYzSXtFTsseVQgzRPwvQrQLmWeMKAx9NM2zw8oqpRw4Pw-h7TJauXmYb7kSD5EDOuf2Ul-EJuq7JAWATBZ4_oV6wu2VE\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">In a LinkedIn poll, 50% of respondents said they would use JumpCloud as their IAM tool if they could build their company&#8217;s IT infrastructure from scratch. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/activity-7135163192523067392-D82P\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">follow-up post<\/a>, Dan discussed the poll\u2019s results, and suggested that they might be a reflection of JumpCloud\u2019s ability to combine directory services with IAM, SSO, MFA, MDM, password management, and more. He also spoke to JumpCloud\u2019s \u201cunique identity offerings most other services don\u2019t support (like Radius).\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the spirit of full transparency, Dan also mentioned that JumpCloud reposted the poll, and 38 JumpCloud employees voted. (What can we say? We\u2019re big fans!) However, it\u2019s worth noting that JumpCloud still would have won by a significant margin without those 38 employee votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If You Build It, Your Dream Environment Will Come&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While a perfect greenfield environment may more often be a dream than reality, there are still ways to move toward your ideal state without implementing a complete overhaul.
