Vault: Generate an MFA Code

Vault can generate multi-factor authentication (MFA) codes internally, removing the need to rely on external authenticator applications. Once configured, Vault automatically generates the MFA code when you connect to an application that requires this second authentication factor.

Prerequisites:

  • You must have the QR code generated by the web applications that require MFA.

Configuring MFA Code Generation

To configure a credential to generate MFA codes in Vault:

  1. Log in to the Vault platform.
  2. In the main menu, click Credentials.
  3. Click + Add Credential to configure a new credential, or click the name of an existing credential to edit it.
  4. In the General tab, scroll to the bottom of the page to and select Credential has MFA checkbox.
  5. Provide a MFA Key.
  6. Click click here to upload a QR code from an external source. You can select a JPG/JPEG/PNG file with a maximum 5MB size.
    • For example: Google, Microsoft, or any other service that uses QR code authentication.
  7. Enter an expiration date of the credential.
  8. Mentions any tags and notes in the respective Tags and Notes fields.
  9. Click Save.

After you complete these steps, Vault displays the automatically generated MFA code for that credential. You can then copy and use this code to complete the authentication for the application that requires it.
