Create an Android Display Settings Policy
Use this policy to control screen brightness and screen timeout on managed Android devices. Configure whether end users choose their own display settings or whether JumpCloud enforces specific brightness and timeout values. This policy works for devices running Android 9.0 and later.
Prerequisites
- JumpCloud's Android Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) is configured for your organization. See Set Up Android EMM.
- Your Android devices are enrolled in EMM. See Add and Manage Android Devices and Users: Enroll Your Personal Android Device.
Considerations
- This policy supports company-owned personally enabled (COPE), fully managed, and dedicated Android enrollment types.
- No action is needed on the device to activate this policy after you save and assign it.
Creating the Policy
To create a Display Settings policy for Android devices, do the following:
Selecting the Policy Template
- Log in to the JumpCloud Admin portal.
If your data is stored outside of the US, check which login URL you should be using depending on your region. If your organization uses LDAP, RADIUS, or requires firewall allow list configuration, the Fully Qualified Domain Names (FQDNs) will also be region specific. See JumpCloud Data Centers for the URLs, FQDNs, and IP addresses.
- Go to Device Management > Policy Management. The Policy Management page is displayed.
- On the Policy Management page, click +Add New.
- Select Device Policy to assign the policy to devices and device groups. On the New Device Policy page:
- Select the Android tab.
- Search and select Display Settings, then click Configure. The Details tab of the policy is displayed.
- On the Details tab, configure the required policy configuration settings.
- (Optional) In the Policy Name field, enter a new name for the policy or keep the default. Policy names must be unique.
- (Optional) In the Policy Notes field, enter details such as creation date of the policy, and information on testing and deployment of the policy.
Configuring the Policy
Under Settings, configure how managed devices handle screen brightness and screen timeout.
Screen Brightness Mode
Under Screen Brightness Mode, select one option:
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| User Choice | End users configure screen brightness on the device. Screen Brightness is not used. |
| Automatic | The device adjusts brightness automatically. End users cannot change brightness. You can optionally set a baseline in Screen Brightness. |
| Fixed | Brightness is set to the value in Screen Brightness. End users cannot change brightness. |
The default is User Choice.
Automatic and Fixed require Android 9 or higher on fully managed devices and Android 15 or higher on company-owned work profiles.
Screen Brightness
When Screen Brightness Mode is Automatic or Fixed, the Screen Brightness field is displayed.
Enter an integer from 0 to 255. The default is 0.
Screen Timeout Mode
Under Screen Timeout Mode, select one option:
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| User Choice | End users configure screen timeout on the device. Screen Timeout is not used. |
| Enforced | The device uses the value in Screen Timeout. End users cannot change the timeout. |
The default is User Choice.
Enforced requires Android 9 or higher on fully managed devices and Android 15 or higher on company-owned work profiles.
Screen Timeout
When Screen Timeout Mode is Enforced, the Screen Timeout field is displayed. Select how long the screen stays on before it turns off. The default is 30 Seconds.
The Admin Portal validates policy settings before save:
- Screen Brightness must be an integer from 0 to 255. When Screen Brightness Mode is Fixed, the value must be from 1 to 255.
- Screen Timeout is required when Screen Timeout Mode is Enforced. The duration must be greater than zero.
If you enter an invalid value, an error message is displayed and the policy is not saved until you correct the configuration.
Applying the Policy
- (Optional) Select the Device Groups tab. Select one or more device groups where you want to apply this policy. For device groups with multiple OS member types, the policy is applied only to the supported OS.
- Or, select the Devices tab. Select one or more devices where you want to apply this policy.
- Click save. A success message is displayed indicating the completion of policy creation.
Viewing Policy Status
- Select the Status tab.
- To see the last Result Log for a device where this policy is applied, click view.
- If any errors occur, they're listed in Exit Status. If you have an Exit Status of 0, no errors occurred when applying or enforcing this policy.
For this policy to take effect, you must specify a device or a device group.
