People of JumpCloud | Jason Willis

People are the lifeblood of any organization, but so rarely do they receive the spotlight like the innovative applications and services, company missions, and devoted customer communities they work so hard to create. We want to change that.

At JumpCloud every individual makes a difference, and their work matters no matter what function they hold. This ongoing series aims to showcase the personalities and contributions of every JumpCloudian and share the spotlight with the people who work hard every day to help Make Work HappenTM.

Jason Willis (He/Him)
Senior Recruitment Specialist
Chicago, IL

We recently caught up with Jason Willis about what it’s like to work as a Senior Recruitment Specialist at JumpCloud.

When did you start working at JumpCloud? August 2020.

How did you first learn about JumpCloud? Through Katy Flatau, Director of Talent Acquisition at JumpCloud.

Can you run us through a day in the life of your role at JumpCloud? My day starts with morning meetings with the recruiting team, followed by my one-on-one with Katy. Depending on the day I may jump into potential candidate phone screens back to back. Or, I may take time to source for candidates on LinkedIn. I usually have at least one weekly hiring manager update meeting, in which I give detailed updates on each candidate and where they are in the hiring process. I end each day by cleaning up any administrative work, reaching out to candidates to check in, and answering emails.

How have you grown as an individual since starting at the company? I’ve become more organized, more strategic in my sourcing strategies, and I am conquering my fear of public speaking.

Pick a JumpCloud value (Build Connections, Think Big, 1% Better Every Day) and share an example of how you lived that value recently. 1% better everyday is my life goal. I try to find a diamond in the rough everyday when sourcing candidates. I also make sure to stay organized and keep all data analytics up to date so that I can provide accurate information upon request if needed.

What is something that you have accomplished at JumpCloud that you are proud of? I’ve helped to hire Senior/Principal and Managers for the Engineering team. I’m constantly trying to achieve hiring goals and build great teams so that JumpCloud can continue to produce great products.

What keeps you energized about working at JumpCloud? The product speaks for itself. Sometimes when I interview people on the phone it can be a challenge to share how great the JumpCloud product is, alongside encapsulating who we are and how great the company culture is. I challenge myself to make sure every candidate I speak with has a positive experience interacting with JumpCloud employees.

What do you like to do on your days off? I’m passionate about fitness, so I work out frequently. I also enjoy spending time with my son. He’s my rock, my motivator, and my reason for pushing myself everyday that I wake up. I also like to discover hidden jewels — whether it’s a park to play at with my son, museums, or any activities that involve learning or physical activity.

What advice do you have for prospective JumpCloud candidates? Bring your “A” game. At JumpCloud, we strive to be great, to become a household name, and to take over the identity/authentication space. Creativity is welcomed and encouraged.

What book or movie have you recently read/seen and why would you recommend it? “Shawshank Redemption.” The main character’s story illustrates impressive knowledge of self, as well as incredible perseverance and determination.

What’s something you plan to do in the next year that you’ve never done? Surpass my hiring achievements by doubling previous hiring numbers. I’d also like to travel internationally with my son.

What is your 15 minutes of fame? I played six years in the NFL and seven years in the Arena Football League. While in college at the University of Oregon we were ranked number two in the nation behind the great University of Miami team of 2001.

If you could only eat one item for every meal for the rest of your life, what would it be? Chicken gumbo, collard greens, cornbread, or AllStar classic from Waffle House.
