Musings On The Return To Travel

I’m writing this as I prepare to head to Denver for the JumpCloud All Company meeting.

Perhaps what I should say is I’m typing this to put off the packing a little before I head off to Denver for the JumpCloud All Company Meeting. This got me thinking: I’ve not been out of the country for work for a long time. I think my last trip out was to DattoCon in Paris back in October 2019. That was a very long time ago for me.

I used to travel a lot – to events, partner meetings, company meetings, etc. But since the start of the pandemic I’ve largely been sitting in my home, at this very desk, day in. Day out. Every day. Ad nauseum. For nearly 3 years.

The first thing that became obvious to me is that I’ve forgotten how to pack. I used to have it down to a fine art. I knew what to put in my suitcase, what to throw in my laptop bag, what I could take through security vs what I had to check into the hold etc, but I seem to need to re-learn all those skills.

I also need to keep on top of all the Covid related regulations: ensuring my vaccination certificate is going to be OK for entry to the US and checking the regulations for the meeting or conference I’m attending.  All stuff I wouldn’t have considered a few years ago.

I think I’m on top of it now and while I’ve got a minute I thought I’d reflect upon the pros and cons of travel for MSPs.

Travel Pros

  • Get to see more of the world
  • Get to meet new people
  • Get to embrace new cultures
  • Learn about exciting new products and services

Travel Cons

  • Terrible tea (Hopefully this could be the trip that proves me wrong!!)

I think, although I’m not sure, that the pros outweigh the cons. What do you think? What do you enjoy most and least about travel? Let me know by commenting in the JumpCloud Community.

Safe Travels everyone. . .
