JumpCloud® Launches Cloud-Based Server Orchestration Platform

BOULDER, COLO. – April 28, 2014– JumpCloud®, the first Directory-as-a-Service® platform, today announced the ability to automate the execution of server management tasks and workflows. Until now, DevOps and IT pros had to manually execute tasks or painstakingly write scripts that would execute across their server infrastructure. JumpCloud now automates executing commands and scripts across a group of servers on a scheduled or ad hoc basis from the cloud. Further, all executed tasks are fully visible, auditable, and logged reducing single points of failure.

JumpCloud’s server orchestration platform significantly reduces errors and time spent on manual server management tasks and workflows. The new updates also increase uptime, consistency of operations, and availability by centralizing and making visible scripts created in an ad hoc fashion and used without the knowledge of the larger organization. It also builds in significant new capabilities for the IT organization: JumpCloud provides the infrastructure necessary to treat servers on the network as a whole, rather than as disparate entities. DevOps and IT pros no longer have to worry about managing a large, complex infrastructure – they can now easily chain tasks together to automate existing workflows.

“Configuration management and container tools, such as Puppet, Chef and Docker, have made provisioning and configuring servers easier than ever. Orchestrating the rest of the work associated with applications, operating systems and data management is the next challenge,” said Gene Kim, author of “The Phoenix Project: A Novel About IT, DevOps, and Helping Your Business Win” and DevOps researcher. “Exciting technologies such as JumpCloud are filling this need which helps enable better automation, consistency and security.”

“Managing servers is an enormously time consuming task for IT professionals and an area that is ripe for streamlined operations. Configuration automation solutions like Chef and Puppet help to deploy applications, but IT is still left with the task of on-going maintenance of the servers, applications, and data,” said Mark Bowker, Senior Analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group. “JumpCloud can enable IT to take a giant step forward with server orchestration functionality that has the potential to unlock a whole new approach to server management.”

Server orchestration joins JumpCloud’s key functionality including SSH/privileged user management, patch detection, admin activity monitoring, and compliance. The orchestration capabilities underpin the entire JumpCloud solution, and will enable users to automate their own tasks. Customers can leverage their existing scripts within JumpCloud by simply uploading them, assigning a schedule, and selecting which servers the scripts will run on. Scripts can be written in virtually any language and run against Linux-based systems. JumpCloud provides an audit log of all commands executed and their results for full visibility.

Key server orchestration functionality includes:

  • Ad hoc or scheduled execution of scripts or commands
  • Support for bash, Perl, Python, Ruby, Go, Node.js, or any other language for which an interpreter or compiler exists on a target host
  • Trigger commands or scripts via Webhooks
  • Results available in the UI or via API
  • Audit logging of executed scripts and commands
  • Tracking of all servers
  • Ensuring service accounts are available across all servers
  • Centralized, secure access to all servers
  • JSON-based REST API

“Being able to centrally schedule, manage, and audit jobs/scripts across all of my servers can be incredibly painful. I have tools that allow me to accomplish parts of what I need, but no quick way to bring it all together,” said Max Parris, Director of Operations at TapInfluence. “JumpCloud makes this very easy for me. I upload my script, select the servers I want, and hit go. I get back the detailed results and have full auditing. Best of all, I get to use my language of choice and am not forced to learn someone else’s.”

“JumpCloud is fundamentally transforming the way admins manage servers. For too long, it has been either manual or a collection of one-off scripts owned by individual admins,” said Rajat Bhargava, President & CEO of JumpCloud. “No longer. There is no reason that some of the brightest and innovative people on the planet should be manually managing servers. JumpCloud’s server orchestration capabilities enable DevOps and IT pros to collaboratively automate their server management workflows giving them back time to focus on real innovation.”
